Where is Silas? (actually they’ll be back soon!)<br />
Posted July 17th, 2010 by admin and filed in Fashion </p>
<p>It is now over 3 years ago that Silas, one of the UK’s most inspirational streetwear labels, decided to call time on distributing to the European market. Well the great news for all the cult followers of the brand is they’re back, and looking pretty much like they’ve never been away!</p>
<p>Silas and Maria was founded back in 1998 by Russell Waterman and Sophia Pantera, and quickly grew into a globally recognised brand. Over the years they have collaborated with some very famous names and faces: James Jarvis (graphic artist and creator of the Amos Toys range and famed King Ken collection), Fergus ‘Fergadelic’ Purcell (renound graphic designer and founder of Tonite Clothing, and Gareth Skewis (one of the brains behind Pointer Footwear) just to name a few. With such a great team of designers and collaborators, Silas and Maria quickly began to put British streetwear to a global audience, and with the help of James Jarvis’ ‘Martin’ figure, they followed on by establishing a UK vinyl toy market.</p>
<p>Many of the UK’s finest and most famous streetwear boutiques such as ‘Bond International’, ‘Hanon Shop’ (who have managed to keep a Silas supply line going for the last 3 years via Japanese import) and the much missed ‘One 40 Five’ store in Brighton built much of their reputations around the success of the Silas and Maria brand. Many a time I personally travelled to the top of the Brighton Laines just to view and buy from the range, which was always complemented by a large range of James Jarvis toys. Somehow the likes of Stussy and Maharishi didn’t seem of that much interest alongside the Silas combination!</p>
<p>In 2006, when the founders decided to focus on other projects, the brand sadly closed nearly all its accounts outside of Japan leaving an army of devoted followers disappointed. That is until now, as Silas is set to return to the UK this summer! Despite being away in Japan for the last few years, they are still collaborating with cutting edge UK designers such as European Bob and shoe manufacturers George Cox, and the early indications are they could be making waves on their return!</p>
<p>Silas will be showing their new collection exclusively at Margin, the UK’s longest running independent tradeshow. Margin has run since August 2002, and has been the launching block for many new brands as well as supporting some of the biggest names on the streetwear scene. This years Margin on the 1st and 2nd of August will see the likes of Obey Clothing (who will be showing off their new ladies range) rub shoulders with not only Silas themselves, but also Gravis, Duffs, Dephect, Vestal and Misticon Clothing.</p>
<p>We are obviously pschyed to be seeing the new Silas stuff, and also look forward to checking out what other newly emerging brands are on offer. To check out what Silas have been up to you can still check out their website at www.silasandmaria.com and for further info on the 19th edition of the Margin show go here www.margin.tv

Margin Shop Tour Videos<br />
13 June, 2010 </p>
<p>UK independent street wear and fashion tradeshow Margin London have momentarily shifted focus from their exhibitors, to the independent stores and fashion boutiques across the UK that best represent what our country has to offer.<br />
The Shop Tour video series sees Margin make the trip to a number of different independent stores across the country, from Brighton to York, taking in some of the best boutiques around including Urban Industry (Eastbourne), Boy Parker (Brighton), Chimp (Leeds) and The Rugged Standard (York). In the videos you can hear a little about the stores from the owners themselves as well as their thoughts on the Margin Tradeshow and how it has worked for them. It’s a great little insight into what goes on behind the scenes at some of these locations and a chance to learn a little more about some really interesting stores.<br />
Check below for our choice pick of the shop tours and head over to Margin on Vimeo to view more. For more on the tradeshow itself, check out the Margin London website.</p>

My Yard SS10 Artist Collection<br />
15 June, 2010 </p>
<p>After a brief manufacturing delay, the Summer collection of tees and sweats from Bristol born My Yard have finally hit the shelves. The My Yard boys took a little extra time to produce the new collection to ensure that all prints and materials met the exact standard they expected, and it appears it’s been worth the wait.<br />
The My Yard Summer collection contains a number of T-shirts and sweatshirts featuring the work of some of the UK’s most exciting and talented artists. You’ll find the work of Batman, Dirty Thirty, Ben Normanton, Andy Council, Cheba and Nikill on a wide range of different coloured tees and sweats. I first picked up on My Yard at the Margin London tradeshow earlier this year and was massively impressed with the samples. Ben Normanton’s work is my personal favourite – clean, punchy graphics with some great illustrations.<br />
The new range is currently available to by from the My Yard Store on Park Street in Bristol and is expected at retailers any day now, including Urban Industry and Chemical Records. The My Yard boys recently shot a lookbook for their collection, in Japan. Check some shots out below.<br />

Margin boss calls for indies to star on website<br />
12 June 2010 | By Eve Oxberry<br />
The founder of young fashion trade show Margin is finalising plans to launch a consumer website that will host video tours of indie stores from around the world.</p>
<p>Show owner Odysseas Constantine said the website would be kept separate from Margin to ensure it was consumer-facing rather than trade-facing. A name for the site has yet to be finalised.</p>
<p>The site will launch in October and feature store tours of indies including Sarah Coggles of York, Ju-Ju in Brighton and Elements in Norwich.</p>
<p>Constantine has toured the country to make the videos and has invited any indie that is interested in being featured to contact him at info@margin.tv.</p>
<p>Indies must have at least one bricks-and-mortar store and sell more than one brand to be considered for filming.</p>
<p>If enough indies from one area apply, Constantine will visit that area to film on-site at the stores. He has just returned from Brighton and is now planning a trip to Middlesbrough for the next filming session, before heading to Rotterdam in the Netherlands in August.</p>
<p>Constantine is yet to decide how the site will be funded, but said indies would never be charged a fee for being featured.</p>
<p>The concept is being tested with a few videos on the www.margin.tv site and Constantine said the response had been positive. “I’ve had tons of emails from buyers since the videos went live. Stores from across the UK and also as far afield as Spain want to get involved.”</p>
<p>Constantine has already filmed 15 indies and intends to have 100 videos completed in time for the site’s launch.</p>
<p>Ahead of the launch, Constantine will promote the new website via social networking sites including Facebook and Twitter and will also post the videos on video-sharing websites YouTube and Vimeo to drive traffic.<br />

Sportswear International<br />
27 May. 2010</p>
<p>MARGIN PREMIERES NEW SHOP TOUR VIDEOS<br />
Margin, the independent London trade exhibition, has turned its attention to promoting its core constituents of indie shops that keep towns and cities stocked with fresh product.</p>
<p>'Independent stores are a vital part of the retail landscape,' said exhibition organiser Odysseas Constantine. 'They're the stores that pick up on new designers first, at least two years before department stores and corporate multiples, and they bring excitement to shopping. After looking around online, I couldn't believe there wasn't a dedicated website promoting these forward-thinking boutiques in a credible or enticing way, so we're planning on launching a consumer-facing website later this year to promote these important shops to the public. In the meantime,' Constantine added, 'the videos are working double duty on the Margin site as well.'</p>
<p>The first wave of Shop Tour videos premiered on May 24 on Margin’s website, and plenty more have been planned in the following weeks. Stores featured in the first wave of Margin Shop Tours include a diverse mix of modern retailers including long-standing design emporium Sarah Coggles in York, streetwear merchants Urban Industry in Eastbourne and Chimp in Leeds, cutting-edge boutique Bespoke in Norwich, and Brighton retailers JuJu and Get Cutie. Additional stores adding some Spanish flavor include Bilbao's newest streetwear store Abricot and board wear mecca The Box in Vigo.</p>
<p>Margin is the longest-running independent trade show for directional men’s and women’s clothing and accessories in London. A proven successful hunting ground for key buyers & press to find new brands since the shows started over seven years ago, Margin is set to host its 19th edition in London this August.

Margin London (Recap) 23 February, 2010 Last weekend we were fortunate enough to be invited along to the Margin trade exhibition in London to get a sneak peak at upcoming collections from a number of brands coming out of the UK and Europe. Over the two days we met a whole load of creative people and were able to see their forthcoming collections first hand, all in one space, which was a really valuable thing. For us it was all about the UK brands on show, with collections ranging from accessories to full menswear & womenswear lines and everything in between. There was certainly a lot to get round and see and as a result we made the trip over both days just to make sure we’d seen it all. With both established and start-up brands on show, Margin certainly had it all covered. Mr. Wingate – Great little brand from London with a big range of graphic tees and sweats. The attention to print and garment materials here really got us going, especially the use of puff inks on a few items. Check out the pub series too (see ‘The Macbeth’ tee above/left) which we felt was rather special. Mr Wingate is available from the new studio/shop in East London, or online here. My Yard – Bristol based artist focused clothing label with a big selection of bright t-shirts and sweatshirts. Their collection features the fine artistic talents of some of the UK’s best street artists and illustrators, including the likes of Nikill and Ben Normanton. Available through select UK retailers as well as the My Yard store in Bristol – keep an eye out for embroidered polo shirts and more coming for SS10 soon. I Am Five – Fresh new brand launched in 2009 with a hefty selection of T-shirts. Designs come with both added comedy value and just straight up simplicity. I loved the intrinsic British nature of the shirt designs, with the queen’s royal emblem and Sherlock Holmes silhouette making an appearance. Keep your eyes peeled for loads more from these guys soon. Ultramega – Brand new T-shirt brand based in London with some huge prints. Definitely one to keep an ‘eye’ on for the future. Check out more of the designs and purchase a few here. Lazy Oaf - One of the more established brands at Margin but still great to see what this brand have planned for 2010. With a new store set to open on March 4th and a lot of exciting product releases scheduled, this is set to be a big year for Lazy Oaf. Look out for the new 5 panel caps and some pretty exciting T-shirt designs dropping soon. Mr. Jones Watches – Crispin Jones creates limited watches with very individual twists. The Decider helps you deal with those tough decisions, The Cyclops offers a more relaxed way to tell the time and The Accurate is “the most accurate wristwatch you can buy” – the hour hand reads “remember” and the minute hand reads “you will die”. All these styles and more are available here. Zelley Bespoke – Our personal favourite brand on show at Margin, a bespoke sneaker lace company based in Norwich. Zelley Bespoke allows you the opportunity to design your own custom sneaker laces any colour, any shape or size, but with a very special touch. Each lace is tipped with a variety of metals and gemstones of your choice. Chose anything from silver tips with cubic zirconia all the way through gold and rubies to platinum tipped laces with inset diamonds! A huge look for any sneakerhead. Keep your eyes on The Daily Street for more from all the brands above. Big thanks to Margin for having us along to the event, we’ll see you again next year. More info on the show here. Lazy Oaf new shop party 1 March, 2010 Quirky London brand Lazy Oaf is moving shop, and to celebrate they are throwing a little shindig in their new shop this Thursday evening! Having peeped the majority of Lazy Oaf’s Spring/Summer collection at Margin, I can strongly advise that you visit the shop and see what’s new in. These guys have got some rad product coming out this year, and rad is the only word to describe it properly. Get down for 10% off all products, cider and sweets. Sounds good to me! See you there.
