Margin the indie fair Wednesday, 24 February 2010 Establishing itself as the trade fair for independent brands, Margin London attracted major international retailers alongside leading independents. This season Margin attracted indie boutiques from across the UK such as Ace, American Retro, Boy Parker, Eternal Envy, Foam, Lunacy, and Social. There was also a strong turnout of international buyers from across Europe and Japan that have regularly visited the show since its launch in 2002. Major department stores attended Margin including House of Fraser, Harvey Nichols, Liberty, Top Man & Top Shop Concessions, Next Brands, and Fenwick, as well as online retailers such as ASOS and Coggles to Ethics Girls and Backin10minutes visited the fair. It shows Margin reaches across the retail spectrum and wants to include all buyers with one common purpose: to stay informed and on top of new brands. The 18th edition of Margin saw an increase in visiting stores interested in fair-trade and organic clothing. For example ethical fashion label Frank & Faith, who previously exhibited at Pure in London, decided to showcase at Margin. The next edition of Margin London will take place from 1-2nd August 2010. Image: Frank & Faith

Margin London Autumn/Winter 2010-11 Edition Despite being the longest-running independent trade event in London, Margin remains a fringe affair and an untapped resource for emerging street wear and young fashion labels. These brands are born out of personal passions often created with handcrafted touches and finishes with local sourcing at the core whether it be the UK or Latvia. DENIM Laundry Maid Jeans are a relatively new name in the premium denim market utilising the British tendency for expert tailoring to produce high quality cuts with meticulous attention to detail and perfect constructional finishing. Futurism inspires Hypnosis’ fashion-forward denim collection, littered with deconstructed detailing from off-centre button fly fastening, twisted seams and dropped-crotch cuts. ACCESSORIES Margin is a hotbed for quirky one-off jewellery brands. We loved Sansonnet, a Tokyo based label whose pretty pieces resembled re-worked antiques meets kiddy-craft kit - very Harajuku. Hannah Makes Things is another fun brand, specialising in pendants ranging from mini donuts to rainbows to cassette tapes! One of the highlight accessories concepts was Sneakart – a range of durable but removable, art-inspired stickers that can be adapted to customise any sports shoe shape. GRAPHIC TEES As expected, graphic tees abound at street wear shows and Margin was no exception. Each label seem to major in art first, t-shirt printing second producing some original graphic ideas in the process. Bristol-based label My Yard commissions local graphic artists to produce designs for the tee label in a range of eye-popping colours. Conquer is rooted in fine-art with the design team producing intricate illustrations which are then applied using a specially developed printing method to ensure the clearest transfer. Finally, Junkfunk is a Brighton-based label entrenched in typography and revolutionary-flavoured graphic design (think Spanish civil war slogans and Cold War motifs). READY TO WEAR There was something for everyone, RTW-wise. Hysteric Asteria designer Alexia Kirmitsi has developed a reversible webbed/inverted knit technique that adorns oversized jumpers and trims jersey dresses. Brighton-based Jojo & Mac produced knitted jumpers and cardigans with cutesy motifs like all-over YSL style strawberries and large placement cats. Germaine Minette brought a range of detailed mens shirting with subtle panelled collars, contrast inserts and lining and wonky welt pockets. 21dgrs are a truly global brand, designed in Hamburg, based and manufactured in Bali, sold in the far-reaches of the Southern hemisphere- even Byron Bay! The collection is diverse with hand-dyed silk dresses, printed tees and detailed washed sweats. Found comprised of unique items creatively salvaged from vintage garments and fabrics. Hannah Makes Things Lazy Oaf Lua Lua Found Laundry Maid Sansonnet 21dgrs Conquer Found Germain MInette Hypnosis Hysteric Asteria Jojo and Mac Junk Funk My Yard Revenge Sneakart Sansonnet

Guess who we fell in Love with at Margin London? When?: 14 February 2010 : 2:00 pm : We went to check out Margin London on Valentines day (no sadly we didn’t get swept of our feet by our Valentine hunks…) to see for ourselves what street wear has in store for us. Well, for one, there were a lot of t-shirts with great prints but that’s not all of course, we met some exciting designers and cannot wait to get to know them better but here are our highlights: Jojo & Mac An old favourite as I’ve been eyeing up her cardigans for a while!! There is an exciting new range on top of the lovely cardigans but all will be revealed another time. (www.jojoandmac.info) Uncommonly Beautiful If it’s good for the environment, it’s good for us, actually it’s more than good!! We love to see designers being inventive with material and Uncommonly Beautiful does just that. All their jewellery comes from recycled material but again… more to come! (www.uncommonlybeautiful.com) Mr Wingate Although known for his print and t-shirts but we’ve noticed his wall papers and just had to talk to him. Turns out he’s been a busy man with a shop opening just around the corner where he will showcase his interior skills and hopefully we can get our hands on some wallpaper. (www.wingateprint.com) Akira Mushi We love the versatility of the Greek duo’s collection. You can wrap it around and wear it in many different ways. If you are wondering where the name comes from, it’s both of their dogs name, how cute! I’m wondering what type of dogs they are… (www.akiramushi.com) There were lots more designers we loved, but we won’t overwhelm you – instead we’ll cover the ones we loved in lots more detail!

F2D @ MARGIN LONDON Wed, Feb 17, 2010 Blog Monday the 15th Feb, the lads took a road trip down the M6 to London to represent down at Margin. Margin is a fashion trade show catering to industry insiders from the brands to press and buyers alike. We went down there so we could cover the event and report back to you guys how it all went down… From the moment we got there we were well impressed with presentation of the event, and the number of different brands all under one roof. Being a clothing brand ourselves it was good to see such an event in action, giving us the chance to mingle and make some new connects while covering the event. There were some sick threads on show from brands like Mr Wingate, Villainous Visard, MY YARD, I AM FIVE (thanks for the Sherlock tee boys), Ashley Marc Hovelle, Origin68, Kalman Lee , Kiddo, plus many others… From what we could gather from the brands on display they were all happy with what Margin had done for them in terms of buyers and press awareness. One brand told me, “we have managed to get quite a few orders from stores over the 2 days so in all it has been a successful event for us”. The lads behind the brand, I AM FIVE, great guys!! – WWW.IAMFIVE.COM WE LOVED THIS TEE FROM MANCHESTER BRAND ORIGIN68 – WWW.ORIGIN68.COM WE RATED THIS TEE FROM THTC – WWW.THTC.CO.UK SICKNESS FROM MY MAN ASHLEY MARC HOVELLE – WWW.ASHLEYMARCHOVELLE.COM I FELL IN LOVE WITH THAT ALL WOOL VARSITY STYLE JACKET FROM ITALIAN BRAND RVNG EQUALIZER TEE FROM NEW BRAND KIDDO – WWW.PLANETOFMYOWN.COM THIS WAS NICE FROM KALMAN LEE – WWW.KALMANLEE.CO.UK VERY BIG STUFF FROM VILLAINOUS VASARD – WWW.VILLAINOUSVISARD.CO.UK The talent was obvious amongst the brands on show and thanks to Margin they had the platform to showcase it. Lookout for exclusive features and interviews here on f2dcollection.com, featuring some of the brands we met and connected with. It turned out to be quite a productive day in London for the boys from Birmingham with our Retro Kid Varsity’s gettin’ a whole lot of love too. Next time Margin comes along make sure you get down there and see what its all about, we think it was well worth the trip most deffo!!!

Lady Sovereign at Margin Tuesday, 12 January 2010 Worn by rapper Lady Sovereign whilst entering the Big Brother show, streetwear brand Lazy Oaf instantly received its 15 minutes of fame. The acclaimed musician signed to Jay Z's Def Jam records, and wore besides a Lazy Oaf t-shirt, a pyramid necklace, and two other Lazy Oaf garments in the house monitored by cameras 24-hours a day. Lady Sovereign is no official spokesperson for the brand, but purchased the Lazy Oaf goods herself. Comments on the social media pages were rather supportive of Lady Sovereign’s decision to swap her Adidas tracksuits for the directional streetwear brand. Lazy Oaf debuted at Margin in 2003 and has grown over the years into a global brand. The streetwear label has a flagship store in Soho and has over 150 stockists worldwide including key stockists such as Parisian boutique Colette and Selfridges. Lazy Oaf will be exhibiting their current range for immediate delivery and new designs for pre-orders at the February 2010 edition of the Margin London. It will be the 18th edition of the independent UK trade event, taking place on 14-15th February 2010 at The Music Rooms in London.
