<p>MARGIN ATTRACTS CULT PLAYERS<br />
Coming to a close on Tuesday, the SS11 edition of London’s trade show weekend proved to be quite a success. </p>
<p>To indulge further in streetwear and young fashion, Margin (August 1 through 2) offered the usual mix of worthy start-ups and more established players with an indie edge. Among the crop of youngsters—Margin’s very raison d’etre—Saint Martins graduate Am Golhar’s directional collection of knitwear for men stood out. The designer’s cable knit joggers might well become future classics. Another strong contender was arty tee label Conquer, which pushed a formula best described as poetic and quietly sinister. Tees featuring whimsical illustrations of vintage toys and dancing bears were among the collection’s highlights.</p>
<p>Sharing space with the freshmen mentioned above—plus the likes of Trikki, Found, AnyForty, KNK and Emilythepemily—was cult name Silas, who marked its return to Europe after a few years away from the scene. Other brands that formed part of the Margin mix this season included Obey, St Vacant, WeSC, Makia, Gravis, Duffs, and Dephect.

<p>MARGIN PREMIERES NEW SHOP TOUR VIDEOS<br />
Margin, the independent London trade exhibition, has turned its attention to promoting its core constituents of indie shops that keep towns and cities stocked with fresh product.</p>
<p>'Independent stores are a vital part of the retail landscape,' said exhibition organiser Odysseas Constantine. 'They're the stores that pick up on new designers first, at least two years before department stores and corporate multiples, and they bring excitement to shopping. After looking around online, I couldn't believe there wasn't a dedicated website promoting these forward-thinking boutiques in a credible or enticing way, so we're planning on launching a consumer-facing website later this year to promote these important shops to the public. In the meantime,' Constantine added, 'the videos are working double duty on the Margin site as well.'</p>
<p>The first wave of Shop Tour videos premiered on May 24 on Margin’s website, and plenty more have been planned in the following weeks. Stores featured in the first wave of Margin Shop Tours include a diverse mix of modern retailers including long-standing design emporium Sarah Coggles in York, streetwear merchants Urban Industry in Eastbourne and Chimp in Leeds, cutting-edge boutique Bespoke in Norwich, and Brighton retailers JuJu and Get Cutie. Additional stores adding some Spanish flavor include Bilbao's newest streetwear store Abricot and board wear mecca The Box in Vigo.</p>
<p>Margin is the longest-running independent trade show for directional men’s and women’s clothing and accessories in London. A proven successful hunting ground for key buyers & press to find new brands since the shows started over seven years ago, Margin is set to host its 19th edition in London this August.

6 Aug. 2009 LONDON S/S 10 TRADE SHOW REPORT Following the departure of TBC and The Park, the London trade show scene for streetwear and young fashion has been far from overcrowded. The existing Margin and Pure Spirit fairs, however, continued to deliver powerful showcases. Over at the intimate and inherently charming show that is Margin (Aug. 2-3), a fusion of 80s disco and Dynasty glam existed alongside a more crisp and fresh alternative. Incorporating sequins with gusto, the punk-inspired label Misfit presented a black hoodie smothered entirely in sequins, each applied by hand. It didnt come cheap but we had to make at least one, enthused Lena Jansen about the collections ultimate showpiece. Going down a more utilitarian path, the London label Arms carried on with its raison detre, namely to provide practical yet satisfyingly quirky clothing for studio based boys and girls. Newcomer Germaine Minette, meanwhile, catered to men exclusively. The labels finely tuned spring collection spanned the entire menswear spectrum, where suits sat comfortably next to cotton shorts and checked runner vests, all of which would impress the modern Dandy with a sense of fun. Being the all-encompassing showcase that it is, Margin didnt exclude denim from the mix. This season, Oak made a welcome return to the show, nestled next to the premium denim player, Trousers London. On the footwear front, Finnish shoe brand St.Vacant served up bespoke styles for men and women that are ergonomical but far from dowdy. To put it in designer Janne Laxs words, its an aesthetic that is timeless but in a peculiar way. Come to think of it, that may well go to describe what works best in London right now. Although the event seemed more quiet than usual (no figures were released), visitors which did come through the door were high caliber and included buyers from Beams, United Arrows, Elephant, Bread & Honey, House of Fraser, Fenwicks, Top Man and Asos. LONDON REPORT: MARGIN ABUZZ, SPIRIT DISAPPOINTS 12 Feb. 2009 London’s trade shows for the A/W 2009 season proved to be something of a desolate affair. With the absence of TBC and The Park, Margin (Feb. 8-9) and Pure’s Spirit section (Feb. 8-10) were the only haunts left showcasing young fashion. When visiting Margin, located again at the Music Rooms in Mayfair, the prevalent tee brigade is impossible to ignore. To mention two of the most notable players, the new label Long Clothing figuratively focuses on elongated styles that can be worn as dresses or tops. Graphic prints come in two choices – faded or in full ink. Created according to an equally simplified formula, Mr Wingate’s tees feature foam prints typically applied around the neck and shoulder area – something that gives the garments a certain “angelic” touch. On the denim front, Trousers London showed at Margin for the third consecutive season. In line with previous offerings, dry denim is the deal, allowing details such as carefully engineered seams and checked pocket linings to come into full focus. Arms is a promising newcomer offering clean, quirky separates for men and women. Designed with practicality in mind and targeting creative, studio-based folks such as graphic designers, key elements include nifty details such as little pen loops and reinforced elbow patches. The womenswear label Miksa is a new entry in the fair trade/organic category. Signified by a sporty aesthetic the label’s A/W 2009 range encompasses casual tops and bomber-style jackets complemented by a range of chunky, hand-knitted alpaca pieces given a romantic spin with the help of pretty ribbon detailing. On the footwear front, hot up-and-comer Rae Jones marked her debut at Margin with a strong collection of comfy yet distinctly stylish shoes and boots; and US label 80%20 impressed with its collection of footwear featuring the celebrated signature wedge heel that is concealed to offer the wearer extra height without a spiky heel in sight. Spirit, Pure’s showcase of young fashion, was in for a good start when it was reinvented a few seasons ago, but this season the show was overshadowed by a disappointing transformation. Presumably attempting to economize and convey a streetier edge, the show consisted of messy concrete floors and open-concept booths, which only served to jar with the brands on show, most of which specialized in neat, feminine products (with the exception of a few denim players such as Monkee Genes and Applebottoms). The disappointment among exhibitors was apparent and visitors were confused by an inconsistent, if not poorly edited, brand line-up. There’s no doubt that the international tradeshow scene is saturated, but in London, there’s a gaping hole waiting to be filled for the market TBC once served. —Emma Holmqvist
