CANVAS OPINION

Canvas Opinion is a new range of limited edition pop-art designs on canvas. Canvas Opinion subverts popular images and icons with visual puns and wordplay on 12 inch canvases. Each artwork is a silk screen print on canvas, stretched round a 12″ wooden frame. The silk screen process gives the images depth and distinguishes them from digital inkjet prints. The canvas has a textured, tactile feel, setting it apart from framed prints.

By combining the feel of 1960s pop-art with the slogan t-shirts of the 1980s, Canvas Opinion has created an accessible way to purchase art as each piece comes in at under £50.

Trendcentral Newsletter September 2003

What you can look out for next Spring
Recently we checked out Margin London, the leading alternative streetwear tradeshow in the UK.

Here are the Spring/Summer 2004 trends we saw:
Colors: The dominant palette consisted of bright pastel shades of yellow, pink, green and blue, for both men’s and women’s wear. The most popular color was Swimming Pool blue, which is a leading contender to be the color of next summer.

Stripes were everywhere at the show. Prints were vertical, horizontal, diagonal, or creatively computer manipulated as seen at the label Urino.

Brighton-based label Get Cutie used original 50s artwork re-printed onto new fabrics to create a new twist on the vintage trend. Underwear designer Nora Nilsson traveled to Honolulu, where she selected original Hawaiian manufactured and print fabrics, which she turned into cute and sexy swimwear.

Other cool mentions:
Trends in fashion and music have always been very closely linked, and Margin’s offerings were no exception. Twisted Generation used recycled 7″ vinyl as a substitute for the traditional ink on paper press release. Lazy Oaf illustrated their business cards with a cassette tape graphic. And Eternal Beau’s line was covered with guitar-inspired stripes. Also available at the show was the first issue of Fact, a publication dedicated to lovers of all things vinyl. The size, shape and design of the magazine resembled a 7″ single, even encased in its own record sleeve.

Art + August 2003 + Thunderbolt

THUNDERBOLT

Thunderbolt recreated a natural environment
in the main room at Margin 2003 with a specially
commissioned sound installation.

Using original field recordings the installation
drew attention to the sonic beauty and sources
of familiar natural sounds, evoking sensual memories.

Thunderbolt’s sound installations are easy to
relate to and use familiar technology such as portable
tape players, hi-fi’s and club sound systems.

Thunderbolt tempted visitors to take a break from
busy schedules by bringing the sounds of far away
to The Music Rooms for the Womenswear edition of

Margin August 2003.

Thunderbolt are sound art musicians, Catrin Jones
and Zoe Riddell, whose other work includes sound
installations and an on-going series of limited edition CD’s.

KAVEL
Kavel Rafferty’s new work is a modern tongue in cheek look at sexual roles. By fetishising the domestic and mundane, it explores the polarised identities available to women. The viewer feels drawn into a voyeuristic world in which they watch the intimate moments of the subjects unfold before them from a hidden vantage point. This group of eight prints, which use a domestic setting to examine sexual stereotypes, explore the idea that the ideal woman is a cook in the kitchen and a whore in the bedroom.

Art + August 2003 + Evil Tony, Lazy Oaf

EVIL TONY DOLLS

Welcome to the world of Evil Tony and friends.
All dolls come from stories and illustrations by Gemma Shiel, the creator of Lazy Oaf.
Evil tony himself is a bad sort, a bit of a loner, that is until he did some time at Her Majesties pleasure, where he was able to befriend like-minded people. There is also Cynthia an evil sibling to Henry who collects used envelopes. Clifford is a presentable young man that enjoys biscuits, and there is Rhonda who loves cats and has lots that all live in her flat above the betting shop. Each doll has it’s own story to tell and individual personality. Evil Tony and friends are all lovingly hand printed and stitched in front of Gemma’s favouite television soaps.
